Bond strength and adhesive failure pattern in bracket bonding with fast halogen light

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of fast halogen light which can reduce the curing time in bracket bonding. Brackets, metal or ceramic, were bonded on extracted human premolars with Transbone XT using fast halogen light or current halogen light. eighty extracted human premolars were used. After bonding, shear bond strength was measured by universal testing machine. Immediately after debonding, adhesive failure pattern in bracket-enamel interface was evaluated with a light optical stereoscope.
The results were as follows.
1. Mean bond strength of ceramic bracket was significantly higher than that of metal bracket using fast halogen light(P<0.001).
2. Mean bond strength increased with time in fast halogen light curing(P<0.001).
3. Mean bond strength in curing for 6 seconds using fast halogen light similar to that in curing for 10 or 20 seconds using current halogen light.
4. In fast halogen light curing, the failure site for the metal bracket was mainly in the enamel/adhesive interface but that of the ceramic bracket was almost at bracket/adhesive interface.
